Alina Kabaeva commented on FIG’s decision about the admission of Russian gymnasts to tournaments

Olympic champion Alina Kabaeva reacted to the decision of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) to allow Russian gymnasts to compete with a neutral status.

“We welcome the decision of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) to allow Russian athletes to compete. However, this is not enough. Russian athletes should have the right to compete under their own flag. The monopoly of individual countries on international sports organizations is unacceptable. The involvement of politics in sport destroys it. At the same time,  we need to create an international sports system that would be free of politics.”

The decision to allow Russian athletes to compete under the auspices of FIG was made public on July 19.  The decision also applies to the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Gymnasts who receive the neutral status will be able to compete starting January 1, 2024.
